Activity/Event Descriptions 2018-2019

BEAUTIFICATION/ RECYCLING:  Responsible for maintaining the front gardens and the planters. Includes weeding, watering, seasonal change of planters etc. Recycling Chair works with Mr. Lamb and students on various projects.  Chairperson: Tara Chadwick ( Co-Chair needed

BOOK FAIR/LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS:  During the week of spring conferences, a Scholastic Book Fair is provided at Independence Elementary for students and parents. Library volunteers will assist in re-shelving books and laminating. Chairperson:  Cheri Troutvine ( Co-Chair needed

BRONCOBUCKS/ SCRIP ORDERS: A passive fundraising program that works while you shop. This program is in its second year and has been a great success. Purchase the same gift cards you purchase at the store and help raise money for our school. Last year gift cards purchased through Independence Elementary Scrip orders raised over $1600.  Chairperson: Sarah Malys

DIFFERENCES DAY:  Volunteers guide the fourth grade students as they experience the obstacles of having a disability Chairperson/Co-Chair Needed

FIELD DAY:  (May 31, 2019) IE students participate in outdoor fun and games promoting physical fitness and teamwork Chairperson:  Tricia Land ( , Co-Chair Needed

FIFTH GRADE CELEBRATION: (June 6th, 2019) A morning ceremony held on 6/6/2019, to celebrate IE fifth graders completing elementary school.  Parent Volunteers from the 4th grade help to organize this event.  Chairperson/Co-chair needed

FUN RUN: (Oct 19th) IE's primary and only active fundraiser which promotes fitness and school community.  The children seek pledges for laps run around a track.  Children enjoy music, refreshments, and school spirit.  Volunteer sign-up sheets are made available at partnership night on 8/22/18 in front of the office.  Chairperson: Allyson Hemsworth ( Co-Chair needed

GARDEN CLUB: A student directed organization that helps to support the learning garden, maintenance of the school grounds and the outdoor classroom. Chairperson: Chelsea O'Brien  Co-Chair Sarah Wilson

HOSPITALITY:  Volunteers assist with set up, serving, and clean up as IE celebrates parents in "Donuts with Dads" (March 5th & 6th 2019) "Muffins with Moms” (May 7th & 8th 2019) and a "Tears and Cheers" breakfast (9/7/18 @8:50am) to welcome parents of Kindergartners , Young 5's or students entering IE for the first time.   Chairperson:  Suzanne Archer ( Co-Chair needed

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION:  Kindergarten students and parents come and visit our school and receive information regarding "The Kindergarten Experience" here at Independence Elementary.  Volunteers guide children through activities to introduce them to IE.  Chairperson Suzanne Archer ( Co-Chair needed

PASSIVE FUNDRAISING:   The Passive Fundraising programs bring in substantial extra dollars to the school.  The PTO promotes involvement in the programs and then is responsible for collection and sorting of the Box Tops, Labels for Education and Tyson labels and redeems them for school rewards.  The chairperson also manages the Kroger Community Rewards, Meijer Community Rewards, Office Depot, and Target "Take Charge of Education" programs and more. SCHOOL SHIRTS:  School spirit t-shirts/sweatshirts are available for purchase in the fall.  There are grade-level, color-specific shirts as well as Independence Elementary Logo shirts available for students and family members.  Chairperson: Tonia Bohne (  Co-Chair needed

SCHOOL WIDE/CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS:  We need more volunteers in classrooms as well as volunteers for special instruction groups such as math and reading throughout the school.  Moms, Dads, Grandparents, and other caregivers are welcome!  Please contact Volunteer Coordinators.

S.O.C.K.S. Day: (April 26th, 2019)  S.O.C.K.S. Day -- Serving Our Community Kids Style -- the entire school participates in grade level specific academic service learning projects.  Volunteers are needed to organize and lead each grade level as well as assist the students during the event.  Chairperson:  Allyson Hemsworth ( & Kelly Duty ( Co-Chair: Angie Klobucar ( & Jamie Hetherington (

SPECIAL NEEDS PAC REPRESENTATIVE(S): Someone to reach out to if the need arises for special services or would like to connect with other special needs families. Attends Clarkston School District Meetings.  Chairperson needed

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK:  A week-long event to show our appreciation to our teachers, office staff, and classroom and building aids, by providing meals, cards and small gifts. Chairperson: Kelly Duty ( Co-Chair needed

TEACHER MEALS:  A lunch is provided for teachers to welcome them back to school, on conference nights in November and in March. Teachers are provided with meals from parent volunteers.

WINTER CARNIVAL: (Feb 8th, 2019)A PTO-sponsored event for all Independence Elementary families that is held on the evening of Feb 8th. Families have an opportunity to play games, participate in cakewalks and raffles, and enjoy a variety of foods and treats. SCHOOL-WIDE support is MUST for a successful night of fun for everyone!  PLEASE mark your calendar now and watch for event information and volunteer signup in early January.  The Winter Carnival Committee will be looking for volunteers to help run games, coordinate raffles, sell tickets and assist with visitor questions.
